Dear Brothers and Sisters,

News from the Executive Board

FAI Conference 2019
If you wanted to be in the middle of the Acoustic and Folk Music industry, the FAI Conference in Montreal, Canada was the place to be in February. Local 1000 was well represented at this conference with many members being recognized at plenary sessions, playing showcase stages and performing in guerrilla showcases. Colin Dean and Ex. Board members hosted a table in the Exhibit hall. We had lots of great conversations with a variety of people from venues to musicians to industry folks all sharing the power and strength of the American Federated Musicians.
As in years past, the board hosted another great Showcase Free Zone room. We had a fantastic set of Local 1000 members leading our evening song circles, Greg Greenway, Reggie Harris, Michael Jerome Browne, Eve Goldberg, Jane Lewis (Local 226) Joe Jencks, Catherine MacLellan, SONiA, and Vi Wickam. Thank you for sharing our very tight room!
If you missed our Membership meeting (in person or via Zoom video link) the minutes are available here. Thanks to all who attended!
SERFA 2019
Local 1000 will have a presence at SERFA 2019. The conference is being held May 15-19, 2019 at the Chattanoogan Hotel in Chattanooga, Tennessee. We will be hosting our popular Showcase-Free Zone, a discussion panel (Title TBA) during the conference and a table in the exhibit hall.
If you are attending the SERFA Conference, please contact Debra Cowan at dcowan@DebraCowan.com. She’ll be looking for members to help.
Cyber Union Calls
The Communications Committee has worked hard to put together a variety of Cyber Union calls for the first part of 2019. These sessions take place on the third Tuesday of each month. They are presented on the Zoom video platform, super easy to participate in these. Our upcoming sessions for the next several months are as follows:
March 19th – New Member Orientation
These calls are designed for members who have joined in the past year. It is a time to find out the union and ask questions of our board.
April 16th – Member Q & A with Joe Jencks
Joe has been a Local 1000 member since 2000. He is a dual US-Irish citizen, deeply rooted in social justice work, and draws on many cultural and artistic reference points in his concerts. Co-founder and primary harmony arranger for Brother Sun, Joe has also penned several #1 songs in the Folk genre, including the ever–relevant “Lady of The Harbor.”
May 21st- Labor History in the US with John O’Conner
John is a founding member of Local 1000 and a scholar of Labor History. John will talk about the history of unions in the United States and how from the 19th century to the present a schism between industrial and craft unionism has both hindered and driven the American labor movement. Industrial union movements organized under the auspices of the IWW and later the CIO inspired countless songs, plays, books and visual art that has impacted our culture in significant ways, making America a beacon for labor culture. Join us for this intriguing conversation.
June 18th- New Member Orientation
July 16th- Member Q & A with Local 1000 member
August 20th- Canadian Recording Contracts
Rosalyn Dennett is our Eastern Rep. She works in the Canadian Federation of Musicians office and is a wealth of information for our Canadian members. This session will focus on the details of the various Canadian Recording contrast available to our members. As a Local 1000 member it is important that we understand all the vehicles we can use to build our careers.
All calls begin at 8:30 pm EST, 7:30 pm CST, 6:30 pm MST 5:30 pm PST. A log in link is provided in our monthly newsletters, on our Facebook page and sent in a separate email a few days before the call.
Video and audio archives of past Cyber Union meetings are available here.
