April Cyber Union Call

Joe Jencks is our April Cyber Union Guest!

Joe will share with us a bit about his musical journeys as a touring musician. This will be a great time to ask Joe question you may have about song writing, solo touring or touring with a group, tips and tricks for the road or other questions you have that can move your work forward. Joe has been a Local 1000 member since 2000. He is a dual US-Irish citizen, deeply rooted in social justice work, and draws on many cultural and artistic reference points in his concerts. Co-founder and primary harmony arranger for Brother Sun, Joe has also penned several #1 songs in the Folk genre, including the ever–relevant “Lady of The Harbor.”

Upcoming Cyber Union Calls

The Communications Committee has worked hard to put together a variety of Cyber Union calls for the first part of 2019. These sessions take place on the third Tuesday of each month. They are presented on the Zoom video platform, super easy to participate in these. Our upcoming sessions for the next several months are as follows:

May 21st- Labor History in the US with John O’Conner
John is a founding member of Local 1000 and a scholar of Labor History. John will talk about the history of unions in the United States and how from the 19th century to the present a schism between industrial and craft unionism has both hindered and driven the American labor movement. Industrial union movements organized under the auspices of the IWW and later the CIO inspired countless songs, plays, books and visual art that has impacted our culture in significant ways, making America a beacon for labor culture. Join us for this intriguing conversation.
June 18th- New Member Orientation
July 16th- Member Q & A with Local 1000 member
August 20th- Canadian Recording Contracts
Rosalyn Dennett is our Eastern Rep. She works in the Canadian Federation of Musicians office and is a wealth of information for our Canadian members. This session will focus on the details of the various Canadian Recording contrast available to our members. As a Local 1000 member it is important that we understand all the vehicles we can use to build our careers.

All calls begin at 8:30 pm EST, 7:30 pm CST, 6:30 pm MST 5:30 pm PST. A log in link is provided in our monthly newsletters, on our Facebook page and sent in a separate email a few days before the call. Video and audio archives of past Cyber Union meetings are available here.

Fire at Highlander Center

Last week a terrible fire burned down the main office at The Highlander Research and Education Center in Tennessee, one of our sister organizations where we have held several member retreats.

A symbol associated with white power movements was found in the parking lot near the fire. Fortunately, no one was hurt in the incident. Highlander is renowned for its pivotal work in the labor, civil rights,  anti-poverty, and environmental justice movements and has been a gathering place for activists, cultural workers and educators for decades. Staff at Highlander Center have committed to continuing their important work in the face of this threatening act, which is but one example of the recent rise in hate crimes in North America.

Time & Truth, new Joel Mabus CD released in Feb, and debuts at #3 on Folk Charts

From Joel Mabus: “I released my 27th album on February 1, 2019. My latest songwriting excursion, Time & Truth, is on my own “Fossil Record” label (I was going to be an anthropologist in college!). When the FAI Folk Chart (alias FOLKDJ-L) was compiled for February, Time & Truth came in at #3 for most airplay. Hats off to my old buddy, and our past prez, John McCutcheon who took the top slot for his new tribute to Pete Seeger.”
