Local 1000 July 2020 Newsletter

17 July 2020 by Local 1000

Local 1000 July 2020 Newsletter

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This is our regular monthly email newsletter. It includes reminders, member news and important announcements from the Executive Board and the office.

News from the Executive Board

Extension of Expulsion Deadline

The Local 1000 board has delayed all expulsions until September 30, 2020.

We are also continuing to waive all reinstatement fees and late-payment fees through September 30, 2020.

If you are currently a member in good standing who is not able to pay the next quarter’s dues, you may choose to resign in good standing. Doing so leaves you with no payments due to the union, but disqualifies you from access to AFM/CFM resources. You may instead choose to go into suspension. You will remain in the union, but will owe all back dues to become a member in good standing again.

Upcoming Membership Meeting

Our next membership meeting will be Saturday, August 15th at 2 pm Eastern via Zoom. We will be sending more detailed information soon but we encourage all members to put the day and time into their calendars!

Bill & Pay Update

Members no longer need to enter their zip code to make payments on Bill & Pay. This primarily affects our Canadian members who were unable to input their zip codes in the text box field provided by Bill & Pay since it only accepts numbers, not letters. Since there was no way to change this to allow for letters we’ve removed the field.

We strongly encourage our members to make payments with Bill & Pay whenever possible because this streamlines the process for the office. Saving time saves your union money! Members receive invoices via email from Bill & Pay with the link “click here to make a payment” which takes them directly to a page where credit card info can be entered. Using Bill & Pay whenever possible (instead of our website which uses Stripe) saves the office from spending extra time making data entry that Bill & Pay does automatically.

Emergency Relief Funds Available

Local 1000 is committed to helping our member who finds themselves in financial crisis due to the current Covid-19 situation. Through the generous contributions of our members and their fans we are able to provide no-interest loans of up to $500 to be repaid over 5 years for members in immediate need during this crisis. To apply, you must be a current member in good standing, or have been a member in good standing as of December 31st, 2019.

In order to help those most in need, we are asking you to apply for this money when you have an immediate need to pay basic costs of rent, household expenses, medical care, etc. If you are able to get by with less than $500, please request a lower amount so we can distribute to as many people as possible. To access the application please go to https://www.local1000.org/local-1000-emergency-relief-fund-covid-19/

MPTF funds for streaming concerts

The MPTF is once again beginning to very carefully review grant proposals and they are going to very slowly begin providing funds for an extremely limited number of traditional live events and they are beginning to ramp up a live streaming performance initiative through the MPTF Facebook page.  Both traditional and streaming events will be considered block grants for a limited period of time.  Return to standard 50/50 Community Events Policy will be determined by the Grant Management Team and the Trustee at their discretion.

No MPTF live stream performances may be pre-recorded, recorded during the performance, or archived in any way.  Failure to adhere to this policy will result in cancelation of the MPTF grant and may impact any future grant requests from the local involved.

If you wish to apply for traditional performances, you may log into their grant system and submit an application.  Please contact us or visit their website for more information.

Scholarships for AFM Families

Children of musicians who are pursuing post-high school education are eligible to apply for the Music Performance Trust Fund’s Music Family Scholarship. This brand new program is open to young adults who have completed high school and will be attending trade school, community college, 4-year college or university as a full-time student for the fall 2020 semester.

Applicants do not need to be studying for a music-related degree, but they need to share an essay describing their experience growing up in a music family. Up to $100,000 in funds will be awarded to students. All scholarship applications must be received by 8 PM ET/ 5 PM PT on Saturday, August 1, 2020.

Call to Action!

In May, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act, which would extend expanded unemployment benefits including the extra $600 per week in benefits through January 2021. But the Senate has still not voted on this critical piece of legislation.

The extra $600 per week in unemployment benefits will run out at the end of this month if the Senate does not act NOW.

Click here to contact your Senators and tell them to support critical pieces of the HEROES Act in the next COVID 19 relief bill including:

  • Extending Pandemic Unemployment Compensation which provides an additional $600 per week that unemployed workers have been receiving since the CARES Act passed in March.
  • Preserving healthcare benefits by passing a 100% COBRA premium subsidy for families who have lost access to their employee-based insurance.
  • Safeguarding renters and homeowners from evictions and foreclosures.
  • Protecting the pensions we have earned by allowing the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (PBGC) to provide partition assistance to struggling multiemployer plans.
  • Increasing funding for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Let your Senators know that musicians and their families need them to act quickly.

Musicians standing together will get through this stronger than ever.

Free Magazine Subscription to “In These Times” for Union Members!

Covid-19 is one of the biggest labor stories in decades, and In These Times has invested heavily in labor coverage over the past few months. This has the potential to be a powerful organizing moment, but we also know that many workers are financially in a precarious position right now.

In order to reach as many union members as possible with their coverage, In These Times will be offering free 12-issue magazine subscriptions to all U.S. union members from now until July 31.

More information is available here: http://inthesetimes.com/offers/free-union-magazine-subscription.html

folkVOTE: MUSICIANS TURNING OUT THE VOTE FOR NOVEMBER

Even during the pandemic, roots musicians still reach hundreds of thousands of potential voters. That’s why Local 1000 member Si Kahn and Art Menius have launched folkVOTE to harness the power of music and musicians to help get out the vote this November. We hope musicians will post our message about the importance of registering and voting on their websites, in their newsletters and social media; talk about it in their online concerts and radio interviews; and write, perform, and share songs about voting and voting rights. Please sign up for our email list and see examples of content at https://folkvote.sikahn.com.
