Local 1000 members were well represented at the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards held on November 29 in Ottawa. Local 1000 member Tanya Tagaq took home a 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award this weekend in the “Pushing the Boundaries” category for her CD “Animism.” “Animism” also won the prestigious Polaris Music Prize in September.
Other Local 1000 members nominated for 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards: James Keelaghan (Solo Artist of the Year, Contemporary Singer of the Year, and English Songwriter of the Year), Joël Fafard (Traditional Singer of the Year), Poor Angus (Traditional Album of the Year). In addition Jason Rosenblatt’s group Shtreiml was nominated for World Group Artist of the Year, and incoming Canadian Vice President Eve Goldberg’s trio Gathering Sparks was nominated for Vocal Group of the Year.
The gala awards show included performances by Local 1000 members Finest Kind and The Good Lovelies. The CFMA awards were handed out in Ottawa as part of a packed weekend of events including showcases, music workshops, jam sessions, and more. Local 1000 members Grit Laskin, Bill Garrett, and Arthur McGregor are members of the volunteer board that organizes the CFMAs.
Eve Goldberg
