AFM Convention Report

I was pleased to be able to represent Local 1000 at the AFM convention in Las Vegas in June, along with fellow member John O’Connor. I was a guest at the Canadian Conference meeting held in the days leading up to the full convention, which was an excellent opportunity to connect with other Canadian locals and further our relationships with them. Member O’Connor attended part of the New York Conference on our behalf.

The AFM convention is held every three years and gives the opportunity for the AFM to set new policies and discuss issues of importance to the union. Although much of the business of the conference and the resolutions discussed will not have much impact on our members, there were a few significant developments. The body passed a resolution proposed by the Toronto Musicians Association (Local 149) to devote more funding to immigration issues affecting our Canadian members. There was also productive conversation about pension fund issues, and inspiring presentations about organizing efforts within the AFM. Local 1000 was able to make a donation from the convention floor in support of striking members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, adding to donations from many other locals over the course of the convention.

All in all, it was an inspiring few days to meet with other AFM members from across North America and re-dedicate ourselves to improving the conditions for working musicians everywhere.

NERFA

Local 1000 will once again have a presence at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance, Nov 7 – 10. Details are still coming together, but we are hoping to host a Showcase-Free Zone, and we will be holding a membership meeting.

More details available on the NERFA website at www.nerfa.org

We hope to see you there!

U.S. Pension Fund Updates

There have been some recent important updates about the state of the U.S. pension fund. You can find the latest updates from the pension fund here.

U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the Rehabilitation for Multiemployer Pensions Act, also known as the “Butch Lewis Act.” It has now been reintroduced in the Senate, and Congressional leaders are continuing negotiations to find common ground on a bipartisan solution. These negotiations may produce changes to the bill before it can pass both chambers of Congress and be signed into law by the President. The Trustees will insist that any resulting compromise must fully address this crisis and treat our participants fairly.

In the meantime, you can contact your Members of Congress here: https://afm-epf.org/Participants/ContactCongress.aspx

We know many members have questions and concerns, so the board will be hosting a cyber union hall on this topic soon. Please stay tuned for details.
