Carrying Instruments on Airlines. The AFM reached an agreement with the TSA (Transportation Safety Administration) in 2002 which encourages airline carriers to permit instruments to be carried on board. A copy of that letter is available here. TSA Letter

NOTE: Each airline has its own policy regarding carrying instruments on airplanes and this letter will NOT trump their policy. Investing in good protective cases and using common courtesy with airline travel, while not a guarantee, go along way toward protecting the tools of our trade.
